November 2018 | Dubai | Singapore

During my last work trip to Singapore I was lucky enough to have a 3-day weekend between 2 conferences that I was attending. There’s nothing I like more than just walking and exploring a city without any specific destination in mind. I let my camera lead me and get completely absorbed in looking for interesting subjects to photograph.

I’m always attracted by bold colors so as soon as I came round the corner of Amoy Street these shutters leapt out at me. I walked for hours exploring Singapore until the last of the light … and then jumped on the MRT to Little India. I had the most amazing Indian meal at Lagnaa Bare Foot Dining … if you’re in Singapore I can highly recommend it … assuming you like Indian food.

September 2018 | Palm Springs | Las Vegas | Boston

Had a great weekend in Palm Springs with my (much) better half and enjoyed an early morning walk along the North Lykken Trail. It’s a steep climb up from the town but well worth it for the views across Palm Springs and beyond.

Knowing that it was forecast to be a very hot day we set off at about 6am so that we could get back down to Palm Springs before the heat built up. Once back down in town we enjoyed a healthy hearty breakfast at Fruit Wonders on N Palm Canyon … delicious!

I snapped this image during a walk around Amagansett (Long Island) during my summer break with the family. What caught my eye was the light in the record store which highlights the bright colors of the posters and complements the window reflection.

April 2018 | Hamburg | Singapore

Hamburg has a special place in my heart ... having lived there as a family (immediately prior to moving to California) for 8 years. Each year I attend a major industry exhibition held in Hamburg and so get the opportunity to revisit some of my favorite places. One of these is the St. Nikolai Memorial. The 360° views from the spired tower across Hamburg are incredible.

The bombing of Hamburg during World War II destroyed the bulk of the church and its rubble was removed leaving its crypt, its site and tall spired tower, largely hollow, save for a large set of bells, together serving as a memorial and an important architectural landmark.

March 2018 | Singapore | Shanghai

I was back in Singapore for a couple of conferences ... and was pleased to be able to carve out a few hours to do a walking tour ... to get some exercise, to try and fend off the jet lag and of course to take some photos. Abandoned under a footbridge near the central fire stations was this tricycle with the sale bag attached.

October 2017 | Barcelona

During a work trip to Barcelona I managed to sneak in a few hours to go and explore the city by foot. Having explored the bustling, colorful market, Mercat de la Boqueria, we headed off through the older part of the city towards the Plaça de Sant Jaume.

Looking down one of the smaller alleys leading away from a side road I spotted this figure, the amazing light and the reflections off the paving.

September 2017 | Long Beach | Paris | London

After a quiet summer for work travel I made up for lost time with trips to Paris, London and Long Beach to attend two conferences and an exhibition. Thanks to jet lag I awoke very early one morning in Paris (well before dawn) and decided to go for a long walk ... and came across Place Vendôme.

Place Vendôme was built on the orders of Louis XIV, as a grandiose setting that would embody absolute power in the very heart of Paris. Napoleon replaced the statue of the king, dismantled in 1792, with a bronze column made from 1,200 enemy canons. The detail in the column base is just incredible.

June 2017 | Cancun | Washington DC | Frankfurt | London | Paris

This month was a crazy one for travel ... business trips to Cancun, Washington and Frankfurt ... then visiting London with my gorgeous wife to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary ... and finished off with a trip to Paris for the airshow … with some sightseeing thrown in for good measure.

We stood and watched the last of the sun's rays cut through the clouds and illuminate La Défense ... took a lot of photos ... and then headed off for dinner at Le Relais de Venise ... which serves ‘probably’ the best l'Entrecôte in Paris (http://www.relaisdevenise.com/).

May 2017

Happily a month with no travel for work ... enjoying the daily walks with Tilly ... and having to avoid the snails making their way (slowly) across the pavement. Loving the flip-up screen on the back of the M5 which makes taking shots like this at ground level a breeze.

April 2017 | Hamburg | DTLA

A candid shot taken during a street photograph workshop led by Julia Dean, executive director of the Los Angeles Center of Photography (see http://juliadean.com/ and https://lacphoto.org/ ). I like the fact that the passers-by are oblivious to me - but the little boy is looking straight at me.

This was one of the first opportunities for me to put my new M5 through it's paces ... using the EF-M lens adaptor that lets me use my EF glass on the M5 ... and the flip-up LCD screen means that I can shoot candidly with the camera at waist height (without making it obvious that I'm taking a picture).

February 2017 | Doha | Dubai

A quiet month for travel - just a quick trip to Dubai (via Doha) for a conference. When I'm at home I like to start my day walking our dog Tilly around the neighborhood -  good exercise (for me and Tilly), gives me some time to listen to podcasts (which I use for inspiration, motivation and personal development) and also some time for photography each morning.

Walking across a footbridge I look down to see what appears to be a one-sided conversation - in marker pen on the concrete floor of the bridge ... I wonder how this story continued?

January 2017 | Frankfurt | Paris | Doha

It's been a busy travel month for work - which means lots of time spent in airports, airplanes, hotels and meeting rooms - and typically not much time outside. Fortunately I managed to squeeze in a photo walk around both Frankfurt and Paris - so got some much needed photography time - plus a couple of long walks in the bag.

These chairs and tables caught my eye as a colleague and I walked around a very cold Paris in early January - the red contrasting with the pavement and the chrome edging catching some of the reflected orange light (and heat) from the patio heaters.
