Gear List
Here’s a list of the gear that I’m currently using for landscape photography and video and am happy to recommend (with links). This does change occasionally as I continue to optimize, i.e. get rid of what I don’t use and reduce the weight of what I carry.
Cameras & Lenses
My Canon EOS R Camera goes with me everywhere … and I have a second body for video (and back-up).
The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS (USM) Lens is my everyday lens … and if I only want to carry one lens … this is it!
Wide and fast, the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III (USM) Lens is an amazing lens for landscape and astrophotography.
An essential piece of kit so that I can use an EF lens on the EOS R is the Canon EF - EOS R Mount Adapter.
I recently added a pair of GoPro 8 Black to the mix so I can shoot vlogs in 4K, and get more action-type shots from my overlanding trips.
Tripods + Support
I love my Gitzo GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod. A good tripod is a worthwhile investment … not cheap, but stable, robust, and a little lighter than a metal tripod.
I’m not a fan of ball heads, so got an Acratech Long Lens Head which limits movement to just pan and tilt - perfect for panos. I paired this with the Acratech Leveling Base for easy leveling.
When I’m hiking and want to minimize the weight and size of my bag I take the Peak Design Travel Tripod with me. Unless I know the conditions are going to demand a more substantial tripod I normally default to this tripod as it’s just so small, light, and easy to use.
I (stupidly) resisted using one for the longest time … now I wouldn’t be without my 3 Legged Thing QR11-LC Universal L-Bracket.
When I travel and want my camera easily accessible during the day I’ll use the BlackRapid Sport Breathe Camera Strap … it’s very comfortable.
I’m a big fan of Peak Design’s anchor links and have them attached to a lot of my gear. This means that I can attach a lot of different stuff to my Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap … sometimes even my camera!
Filters
This is the range of filters that I use for my landscape photography … without question, the circular polarizer sees the most use:
Nisi V7 100mm Filter Holder with Nisi True Color NC Circular Polarizer
Nisi 100mm IR ND Filters - ND8 3 Stop, ND64 6 Stop, and ND1000 10 Stop
Nisi Natural Night Filter (Light Pollution Filter)
Nisi 52mm ND-VARIO Pro 1.5-5 stops Enhanced Variable ND Filter
Nisi 52mm ND-VARIO Pro 5-9 stops Enhanced Variable ND Filter
And the adapter rings for my lenses: 52mm, 67mm, and 77mm.

I use a range of different Nisi Filters that participants can try out during my workshops before ordering.
Bags + Backpacks
I love this backpack. The MindShift Gear BackLight Elite 45L Backpack … allows me to carry all the photography gear I’ll need on a day hike plus all the other stuff required to stay warm/dry, safe, fed, and watered.
For air travel the ThinkTank Airport Intl. Rolling Camera Bag is perfect for taking all my gear with me on the plane.
Audio
When shooting video … good audio is essential. I recently upgraded my setup and now use the Rode Wireless Go II Wireless mic system. Great audio, lightweight, and wireless … what’s not to like?
For audio recorded in my home office, I run the audio through the Zoom H4n Pro 4-Channel Handy Recorder before the camera so I have two audio tracks to select from.
Other Stuff
I backup my SD cards on the go with the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD Rugged Backup Device … they are robust, easy to use, and work without needing a laptop.
I use Sony 64GB Tough SD Cards … and have never had a problem with lost images.
The Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 adds GPS location data to my images whilst shooting with the EOS R … far easier than pairing with my iPhone.
My Princeton Tec Apex Pro LED Headlamp is invaluable as it’s bright enough to light the way back down after dark … even over rough ground.
As I often explore and shoot alone I always take my Garmin inReach Explorer+ … as well as helping me find my way it’s an SOS beacon.
